Barbs's Big Bike RIde

This year I have decided to stay and enjoy an English Spring. It has been a long time coming but at last it is here and I am off to explore my own back yard. Well actually travelling up the UK mainland as far north as possible before 21st June and see how close I can get to the Midnight Sun.


After my travels along the Camino de Santiago across northern Spain last September on my trusty old iron donkey, I have bought a lighter bike in the hope that I can get up a few more hills and by going from Lands End to John o Groats (LEJOG) I can avoid the killing headwinds of the Spanish meseta.


So here she is, we had a jolly naming ceremony on Saturday and hopefully the good friends, food and weather I enjoyed will carry me through to the farthest northern climes. Thank you all for a great send off, admirably topped off with one too many pints The Village Bike listening to Mojo Triangle.


And she is called Eleanor, isn't she beautiful, I hope I still have such tender feelings after 6 hours in the saddle, but probably only in the nether regions I fear.


The map link on the right will show a rough itinerary and route and I will try try to update with my actual route, if I can work out how and where I am as I go along, you know there will be little correlation but I will get there or somewhere in the end!

And the final goodbye

Thank you to Tim and Joan for a super lunch at the BQ.
All packed and ready to go, enjoyed a final long hot shower and a last episode of neighbours.

    We hope that you arrived ok and are of course having better weather than us. We are busy preparing for The Frollies show tonight. All going well and miss your help in the past. You have had a lucky escape from jacket potatoes and cakes! Quite a squeeze tonight with over 110 tickets sold. We will let you know how it went. Love Joan and Timx

    Hi Barbara - hope everything ok and can't wait to hear your news. Our garden fence is flattened in places - wind is incredibly strong, so hope that your weather is better!!!

    the weather here is fab, clear and sunny in the mornings and getting hot in the afternoons. It cools quickly in the evenings and we sit around the fire. I even needed an extra blaket in bed, but better than being too hot. I think they had a spectacular rain shower just before I arrived so all is lush and not too humid

    Hi Barbara

    Lovely to see where you are staying. Well done in getting the sewing machines going. It would be wonderful if you could set up a little money generating business after making the bags for the children. You will be making football shirts soon. The boys would like that. Let me know if you need any specific team names and numbers!!

    Tim has had 4 blissful days of me without any voice again. 5 of the members of the Chiswickenders sketch are ill as well.Probably all the good luck kisses before the show.

    Today's physio tip. Keep doing all your yoga stretches for your back and you will soon feel better. Try not overstretch your joints
